The DVDs for the whole show were originally released by Columbia Japan in 3 mini-boxsets. The first mini-boxset was released on 21 September 2001. Exactly a year later on 21 September 2002, the individual DVDs were released progressively. The Complete DVD Box collects all 16 individual DVD volumes and repackaged it as a complete set. This review covers the box packaging and the extras that come with the set. Reviews of the series are done separately on volume by volume basis. Audio: Refer reviews of the individual volumes. Video: Refer reviews of the individual volumes. Packaging: The box is a fairly sturdy cardboard box with dimensions of approximately 11вЂќ(h) x 8.5вЂќ(w) x 6вЂќ(d). The box cover comprises the top and all four sides with a slit at the top for a white rope handle that is used to lift the box. Lifting the whole box is easy as all you have to do is just lift the rope handle and the whole box is lifted. It's a box that I like. The art of the box replicates the name post of a bridge in the series. This is a printed sheet that is wrapped around the four faces of the box cover and another printed sheet for the top of the box. The prints look quite nice in what they attempt to replicate. Oh, the name of the bridge on the face of the box? вЂњBridge of TearsвЂќ. The 16 DVD volumes are stacked face-down one on top of the other. Three 40-page colour booklets are then placed on top of the topmost DVD volume (Volume #1). A plain card is then placed on top of the booklets to protect them from the ends of the rope handle. The DVD volumes in the box are just a collection of the individual DVD volumes released earlier. The box only provides all 3 of the 40-page colour booklets that come with the 3 mini-boxsets. It is understandable as this box collection is an economical way to obtain the whole series at a cheaper price than either buying the 3 mini-boxsets or all the 16 individual DVD volumes. The colour booklets are a nice trove of information. They provide episode summaries, character designs, screencaps of the show, mini storyboards, production draft designs and individual episode credits. There are also fairly detailed articles provided on the series along with interviews with Osamu Dezaki (series director), Chiba Tetsuya (mangaka), and staff. Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers) Refer reviews of the individual volumes. In summary: The box packaging is practical, sturdy and straightfoward. Considering that this is the most economical way to get the whole series and bundles the same individual DVD volumes and all the booklets that come with the 3 mini-boxsets, it is a very good buy.
